Red
Dead Redemptions
A) Genre
IGN said that Read Dead Redemption was a “Western American” game. While the telegraph makes a bold statement in saying “Red Dead Redemption is the best Western ever made for a console and easily one of the best video games of this year.” This suggests they are in agreement with IGB over the fact that game is in fact part of the western genre. The telegraph also compares the game to Grand Theft Auto when it says “t's tempting to chalk Red Dead Redemption up as simply the Wild West entry in the Grand Theft Auto franchise.” This help to put the genre in place for users who know what GTA is like; an open world action adventure series created by the say company, Rockstar.
B) Target Audience
Gamesradar+ stated that in their own censor rating the game gained a “mature” rating. When explaining the storyline IGN tell us that if you “Walk through town and you might see a drunk assaulting a prostitute” This suggests that the target audience for the game is not children and more so adults. Further evidence to suggest this would be when the telegraph review states that “Red Dead Redemption contains several impressive action set pieces, involving cannons, Gatling guns and quick draw shoot-outs.” This further shows the game has a violent side to it which would be considered only appropriate viewing for adults.
C) Narrative/Storyline
IGN states that the storyline of Red Dead Redemption “will take you all over a vast swath of countryside that straddles the border between the U.S. and Mexico and along the way you'll meet, assist, and spill blood with a fantastic cast of supporting characters as Marston attempts to set things straight.” Along with comments made by the Telegraph “the player is dropped into its note-perfect Wild West environment.”
D) Characters
IGN states that “Red Dead Redemption puts you in the shoes of the relatively neutral John Marston.” This suggests the game is played form his point of view. Further more they go on to say how “the characters are wonderful with top notch dialogue and voice acting all good enough to make you feel a part of the world.” However, despite this they make a critique when the criticize the main character, “If there is any criticism I could level at the story, it's that Marston occasionally feels divorced from the action, his motivations muddled as he is all too willing to help anybody that asks for it despite his own pressing matters.”
E) Gameplay
The game play is described by IGN as captivating when they suggest “players keep coming back to the game for months and months due to something called Free Roam.” They later go on to explain this free form gameplay “This is the multiplayer lobby of sorts, but the concept has been cranked up a notch to be an entire game in itself. Free Roam lets up to 16 players join into one world and then explore the entirety of the single-player map. You can form posses and take part in little skirmishes, simply shoot each other in the face, assault bandit hideouts and forts as a team, or just ride across the countryside together while taking part in hunting and gathering challenges.”
Gamesradar+ makes the connection between previous titles made by the same company when it sates that the games gameplay “all plays out like GTA except in 1911.”
F) Platform
Red Dead Redemption is available on Xbox 360 and PS3, this is stated by The Telegraph. However, a comment made at the start of the IGN article “With Red Dead Redemption finally being added to the Xbox One backwards compatibility list today”
This suggests that the game was later added to Xbox One after its release.
G) Personal Recommendations
There are many reasons as to why Red Dead redemption is a successful game some include its connections to the very popular series GTA. This game series took off due to its open world gameplay something which Red Dead features and is one of the reasons it vows so well wit that side of the gaming world. Its uniqueness, is another reason why I think the game is successful this includes the environment and the story to which the game is played in. Not many games that are set in the wild west can be compared to and Top some of GTAs sales. I would recommend that the game is aimed towards an older audience just based off of the violence involved in parts of the storyline.
